GTA IV: Why Sony lost the exclusive

By: Goffey

The lovable Phil Harrison took some time to address a number of internet bloggers during GDC yesturday. One of the questions addressed the somewhat recent loss of the Sony exclusive GTA series. Here was Phills reply:

“I don’t think PS3 has the install base to support Rockstar’s investment in GTA IV on its own,” said Harrison. Reinventing a sandbox-oriented series on next-generation platforms can’t be a cheap endeavor, so while PS3 plays catch-up with Microsoft in terms of userbase, Rockstar must unsurprisingly cover its bases and ensure they’re reaching the maximum amount of gamers when GTA4 releases this October”

Phil has said some pretty ummmm peculiar things over the last year or so but this time he makes the most sense he ever has.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised he didn’t try to put some spin on the issue and try to make it look like a positive for Sony….you know, something along the lines of “Well you know, GTA is so last gen anyways and people are no longer interested in this game.” So way to go Phill!!!

This is just more proof to the pudding that console exclusivity is well on it’s way out the door(not because GTA lost its exclusivity but because companies such as MS and Sony realize that unless you’re going to throw devs a LOT of money…they will take their games to as many places as possible). Rockstar is a huge developer that really has no problems with money and/or funding, the fact they are going multiplatform to get a return on investment speaks volumes for the developement costs this gen.

So how long do you guys think it will be until we see DMC, MGS4, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, FFXIII all go multiplatform?……….my bet, MUCH sooner than later.
