PSP change coming soon?

by Jeffrey Rousseau

As many of you may or may not know things aren’t doing so well for Sony’s other system, the little handheld that could know as the PSP. I know sales weren’t strong but apparently I didn’t know how bad.

As stated by

“Something needs to happen with the PSP, ASAP. That’s the message retailers have, according to our sources, sent Sony. With sales of the PSP lagging (Sony’s PSP hardware shipments to retailers last Fall were down 72 percent over the year before, only a meager 10,000 units in the U.S.), word is that a few big name retailers have given Sony a mandate: drop the price or they’ll drop the system from their stores. Entirely. With shelf space at a premium, the expectation is for Sony to do something substantial to keep its hardware moving — or else.”

Now if you think the above statement is wrong in anyway it isn’t whatsoever. In retail when you have a product barely chugging along or selling its as good to a store as holiday marketing in Summer. In all seriousness though for retailers to demand the aforementioned to Sony means things are well…bad. Fear not though because something is a brewing with the PSP.

“Sony did share plans that got retailers excited. Of course, what these plans were exactly, he wouldn’t say. Could they be new PSP colors that have been previously shown and released in Japan and Europe? Or could they be the redesigned PSP with 8 GB of flash memory that’s been rumored for ages? Or could they be the launch of some new PSP video/music download service? We’ll likely have to wait a few more weeks to find out. ”

What this “needed” change will be is far from known at this point. I’m sure won’t be a price drop, that much is certain. If they pull a Nintendo with a nice slim redesign with more colors then maybe things will look better. What would really help the system out is to allow us PSP owners to buy old PS1 classics without it being only available via the PS3. Simple truth is this all good things come to those who wait and that’s all we can do right now. Hopefully the wait will be worth it.
